Stories

Published so far…

Don’t get too excited. It’s mainly articles, opinion pieces, short stories and ramblings about my kids. I used to have a fairly successful dad blog and so there are a fair few stories out there under the authorship of ‘Alex from Dadrites’ but due to the sheer volume of creeps on the internet, I got rid of most of it. The following is what survives (or the things I wrote that aren’t directly related to my own children).

Grass Fires
ART ~ POP CULTURE ~ MUSIC ~ SKATEBOARDING

Grass Fires is a grassroots magazine. We aim to deliver quality, interesting, funny, creative and shit-hot content to you, our friends, from an online platform as well as the traditional (tactile, coffee table sitting, oh, that amazing ‘paper stock’ smelling) bi-annual magazine.

Art, pop culture, music and skateboarding… it’s all in Grass Fires.

I wrote two articles for issue one called, DON’T DRINK THE KOOL-AID, IT’S GOT KALE IN IT and FULL DISCLOSURE in which I called myself out for what I wrote in the first.

DADS BEHAVINGS DADLY 2
72 MORE TRUTHS, TEARS & TRIUMPHS OF MODERN FATHERHOOD

I had two stories published in this wonderful collection. One is about being overwhelmed as a father and struggling to play a simple game of hide and seek (which I imaginatively called, HIDE AND SEEK) and the other is about the time I was woefully underprepared on an international flight when my baby daughter had what can only be described as a ‘number 3’. You can read POOP ON A PLANE, here…

[UNTITLED]
THE BEST POCKETBOOK COLLECTION OF STORIES IN AUSTRALIA
‘the chilling Bringing them Home’ – George Ivanoff

The 5th issue of [UNTITLED] by Busybird Publishing contains my short story, BRINGING THEM HOME, the tale of a young boy living on the clifftops of southern England following his father into a blizzard to help bring home a stranded vessel. Or so he thinks.

SHORT AND TWISTED
STORIES AND POEMS WITH A TWIST

This lovely little collection from Celapene Press contains two of my children’s poems, THE STORY OF CHARLI AND THE GRAVE and SPILT MILK. I believe there’s also a really dodgy illustration I made for SPILT MILK 😀

I love that word, ‘twisted

DOTDOTDASH

dotdotdash is a tri-annual creative journal run by Perth volunteers. Each issue of dotdotdash packs a full-colour punch of new artworks, stories, creative non-fiction, and poetry.

Sadly, DOTDOTDASH is no longer with us but it was a great little Perth-based ‘zine’ that published my story THE LADY in their second issue. Funnily enough, THE LADY, though written well over ten years ago, has a part to play in the upcoming THE BOOK AND THE BLADE.
